American bass Gregory Reinhart is known throughout the world for performing an extremely wide repertory of operatic roles, concert works with orchestra as well as recitals with piano. For his guest artist debut with the new Oslo Opera House in October 2009, Reinhart had another success with one of his signature roles, Seneca THE CORONATION OF POPPEA. Critics referred to his "brilliant bass voice" and ease in vocalization. The next week he stepped in to replace Hagen GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG with the Sao Carlos Theater of Lisbon, with enormous success. As King Marke TRISTAN UND ISOLDE this season in Wuppertal the bass was praised in Das Opernglas for his voice's "voluminous character and aristocratic timbre...with nothing to envy from the competition." Last season he sung a number of roles including in the new opera FAUST by Philippe Fénelon; MATHIS DER MALER by Hindemith; and The Parson in THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN.
Mr. Reinhart's performing repertory includes the leading bass Wagner roles such as Landgraf TANNHAÜSER, Daland DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER, König Marke TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, Hunding DIE WALKÜRE, Fasolt DAS RHEINGOLD and Hagen GÖTTTERDÄMMERUNG. These are in addition to many roles of Mozart, Rossini, and the major French composers. He has been applauded in many parts of Europe for Rocco FIDELIO and Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE. A gifted actor, he is equally at ease with comic and serious roles. Gregory Reinhart is considered one of today's finest performers of Seneca L'INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA (Metropolitan Opera Guide to Recorded Opera). Mr. Reinhart triumphed in Paris and Amsterdam last season as the aged Arkel in a production of PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE conducted by Sir Bernard Haitink, and a DVD of a live performance at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées is currently in production.
Though he makes his home in Paris, dividing his schedule between Europe and the U.S., Gregory Reinhart has recently come to the forefront on American opera stages. Praising his 2006 debut with the Metropolitan Opera in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, the New York Times credited him as a "startlingly powerful bass." He will return to the Met during the 2010-2011 season in both DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE and CAPRICCIO. In 2007 he made company debuts with Portland Opera as Oroveso NORMA and with Pittsburgh Opera as Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE. He opened San Francisco Opera's 2008-2009 season with their new production of TANNHÄUSER and was recently selected by Placido Domingo to debut as the Old Hebrew SAMSON ET DALILA with the Washington National Opera, conducted by Domingo himself. The bass debuted with the New York City Opera as Claudius AGRIPPINA and is often a guest artist in the Festivals of Aix-en-Provence, Halle / Saale, Santa Fe, Pesaro, Evian and Orange. Mr. Reinhart's upcoming engagements in the US include a performance of BERENICE with the American Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Reinhart's French roles include Marcel LES HUGUENOTS, Narbal LES TROYENS with Paris Opéra-Bastille, Frère Laurent ROMÉO ET JULIETTE in Turin and Arkel PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE in Rouen, Paris and Amsterdam. Also Le Gouverneur LE COMTE ORY which he performed at the Pesaro Rossini Festival, La Fenice, Venice, Lyon and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. He performed Tchelio in the French version of LOVE OF THREE ORANGES in Lyon and at with San Francisco Opera, which is available on DVD. Mr. Reinhart has performed the Commendatore DON GIOVANNI at the Santa Fe Festival, Mustafà L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI and Douglas LA DONNA DEL LAGO in Nice and Alidoro LA CENERENTOLA in Strasbourg.
To Mr. Reinhart's credit are two world premieres at the Paris Opéra of Manoury "K..." and Dusapin PERELÀ, UOMO DI FUMO and the premier of Lowell Liebermann PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY as Basil at the Monte Carlo Opera, staged by John Cox. He performed the role of Claggart BILLY BUDD in Toulouse; Trulove THE RAKE'S PROGRESS in Paris; Oberlin in Rihm JAKOB LENZ in Nancy, Strasbourg, Bordeaux and Les Amandiers in Paris; and The Badger/The Parson THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Paris, sung in Czech. The operas of Handel have displayed his multiple talents in roles such as Zoroasto ORLANDO, Argenio IMENEO, Claudio AGRIPPINA and the title role SAUL, which was also recorded. Mr. Reinhart will make two return engagements at the Opera National de Paris during the upcoming 2010-2011 season in their production of MATHIS DER MAHLER and as the Fifth Jew SALOME.
Gregory Reinhart has collaborated with conductors Pierre Boulez, Semyon Bychkov, Bruno Campanella, James Conlon, Placido Domingo, Myung-Wung Chung, Dennis Russell Davies, Jane Glover, Bernard Haitink, James Levine, Kent Nagano, Alessandro de Marchi, Seiji Ozawa, Sir John Pritchard, Jeffrey Tate and Klaus Weise. He holds a Master of Music degree from The New England Conservatory, Boston. He trains with Jacques Chuilon in Paris.
