John Fulton

During the summer of 2011 American baritone John Fulton made two important concert debuts; the first under the baton of Lorin Maazel as apart of the Castleton Festival in which he sang the baritone arias of Gershwin's masterpiece PORGY AND BESS, and the second in a similar concert presentation under Bramwell Tovey with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood.  During the 2007-2008 season he debuted as a member of the New York Harlem Productions Inc. touring production of PORGY AND BESS.  With this company Mr. Fulton has performed the roles of Jake, Crown and Jim in numerous opera houses across Europe, including the Stadtstheater Hannover, the Carré Theater in Amsterdam and the Strasbourg Theater to name a few.  Mr. Fulton has also recently completed two seasons with the Arizona Opera in the Marian Roose Pulin Young Artist Studio.  During the 2008-2009 season he performed the roles of Masetto DON GIOVANNI and Sciarrone TOSCA and the following season he performed the Cappadocian SALOME, Schaunard LA BOHÈME and Fiorello/Police Sergeant IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA with Arizona Opera.  Other recent engagements include performances of the role Morales CARMEN and Crown PORGY AND BESS at Tulsa Opera, Fiorello IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA with Michigan Opera Theatre and the role of Marullo RIGOLETTO in concert with the Westfield Symphony Orchestra in New Jersey.  Mr. Fulton looks forward to making a debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in a concert-version of PORGY AND BESS under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle.

Mr. Fulton has performed Figaro IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA and Marquis d'Obigny LA TRAVIATA with Opera Colorado, Count Almaviva LE NOZZE DI FIGARO for Opera Theatre of the Rockies, and Count Ceprano RIGOLETTO and David A HAND OF BRIDGE with Berkshire Opera.  He has additionally taken part in several outreach projects for Cincinnati Opera including the part of Robert Garner in Richard Danielpour's MARGARET GARNER.  

In the summer of 2006, he returned to Berkshire Opera for Prince Yamadori MADAMA BUTTERFLY and Peter HÄNSEL UND GRETEL.  In 2003 and 2005, as an apprentice artist at Central City Opera, his roles included John/Tom FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR, Barney Ford GABRIEL'S DAUGHTER, and the Narrator and soloist in The Quartet of the Defeated PAUL BUNYAN.

Mr. Fulton was awarded the Richard F. Gold Career Grant and the Apprentice Artist Award at Central City in the year 2005 and he won the prestigious Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Wolf Lieder Competition in New York in 2003.

Mr. Fulton has studied voice with Metropolitan Opera baritone Mark Oswald, has collaborated with conductors Steuart Bedford and Hal France and has been directed by Catherine Malfitano, Ken Cazan and James Robinson.

Mr. Fulton is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and studied at UNC Greensboro, before going on to gain his MM at Eastman School of Music and his Professional Studies Degree at Manhattan School of Music.
